Lesson Plan for

The Symbols of Christmas

After a live presentation, or just a simple reading, of 'The Symbols of Christmas' there are a great many activities and projects that can be implemented with the children who have just heard it.  These activities and projects can help to reinforce what the children have just heard and help to build a stronger memory of what each symbol means.  Here are just a few suggestions:

  • After the reading, the teacher could lead a discussion or have some questions and answers about the story, what happened in the families living room,

  • After each symbol was mentioned  you can invite all of the children to give suggestions on where they might see these symbols in the coming holiday season.

  • The teacher could have a little quiz on the symbols that were show and what they meant.  The quiz could be more verbal for smaller children and more detailed for older children who might be challenged to write down each symbol they remember and give a description of what each symbol meant.

  •  Finally, the children could take out crayons and paper and draw pictures of their favorite symbol  and maybe where they may have or think they will see it this year.

  • Larger projects could be done such as making a wreath and including on it each of the symbols.  These wreaths can be as simple as being made of construction paper, or if budget permits could be made of actual wreaths and actual items, i.e., a small bell a piece of real ribbon, a small red ornament, a candle, etc.

If you have a suggestion for something that couple be done as part of a lesson plan, I would love to hear of it and if we add it to the list, we will give credit to you.
